Who we are and what we do

IMPLICATE consists of professional artists, emerging practioners and specialists in other fields, who all have a strong interest in contemporary art practice. As a collective that works collaboratively, we offer less experienced art practioners the chance to learn from experienced artists how to translate ideas into conceptually innovative practice; we also enable established practioners to work in partnership with those whose specialisms or experience lie in other fields.

Our aim

The aim of the group is to challenge the hierarchies that exist within the art work that divide ‘artist’ from ‘non-artist’, ‘professional’ from ‘non-professional’. We believe that these seemingly solid boundaries stymie the creative dialogue and radical practice that can be the result of bringing a very diverse range of experience, knowledge and artistic practice, to bear upon a large collaborative artwork. We believe that our democratic way of working, which places value on this diversity of experience, knowledge and practice, fosters a breadth of thinking that can challenge the orthodoxies of contemporary art practice. This enriches the personal and artistic development of individual members of the collective, whilst simultaneously marking a step forward in the production of large-scale collaborative artworks.

IMPLICATE is committed to fostering equality of access and equality of opportunity. The collective aims to increase its membership and thus the potential for further dialogue and collaboration.

IMPLICATE meets at least once a month to discuss individual work, forthcoming group projects and to work collaboratively. Our meetings increase in frequency in the run up to exhibitions and during collaborative projects.
